Senator Sonni Ogbuoji, representing Ebonyi South district, in collaboration with National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), has donated skills acquisition training equipment worth N150 million to women in the five local government areas in the Southerndistrict of the state.
The facilities, which aimed at tackling rural poverty at the grassroots, would get to the targets through the 22 Development Centres, the forth tier of government in the area.
Handing over the facilities to the councils and Development Centres, Ogbuoji explained that the gesture was one of the benefits of the cordiality between the legislative and executive arms of government.
He explained that empowering women would have more direct positive impact on the families as the women are more often closer to the children and could have less distraction.
“I thank God for making this available for my people. I avoid making hasty promises but when I do make any promise I ensure that it is fulfilled. Our people have been marginalised, especially my people in the South zone, so I will ensure that nothing meant for them is denied them. The handover we are doing today is that of 2012 and by the grace of God that of 2013 will also materialise”, he stated.
Ogbuoji, the vice chairman, Appropriation Committee of the Senate noted that the incidents of crime could be reduced by generation of employment through the empowering of women with skills as they would also train others including their children.
He charged the councils and DCs managers to ensure that the facilities are judiciously used.
The acting Director General of the NCWD, Mallam Abdulmalik Dawuda, represented on the occasion that held Afikpo by Mr. Sadeaq Omar, explained that the Federal Government recognises women, who comprise no less than 50 per cent of its population and 70 per cent of the poor, yet contribute immensely to nation building.
