Troubled Wukari town, in Taraba State, was again involved in a fresh orgy of violence on Friday which claimed several lives.
A resident of the town, who declined to be named, told our source on telephone that Friday’s violence was as a result of a scuffle between a group of Jukun and ‘settlers’.
“The Jukun people were observing funeral rites for one of their prominent sons who died recently and some of them went to the areas populated by non-Jukuns and they started chanting insulting songs which irked some of the youth in the area and a scuffle ensued,” he said.
The source added that elders in the area intervened and stopped the scuffle from degenerating into a major fight, and everybody dispersed.
“But, shortly after, we started hearing gunshots in several parts of the town which lasted almost throughout the day until the military came in this evening and the state government imposed a 24 hour curfew which forced everyone to stay indoors,” he said.
He said the town was now calm as military operatives now patrol all the streets
Efforts to reach the police or military spokesperson were unsuccessful as at press time.
Kefas Sule, the spokesperson to the Taraba State Acting Governor, confirmed the crisis but said normalcy had returned to the town.
He confirmed the 24-hour curfew slammed on the town, saying it could be reviewed on Saturday after thorough security check that the crisis would not re-occur.
