Commercial activities in the Southeast geo-political zone may be halted on June 8 – the day declared as sit-at-home by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB).
The self-determination group said yesterday that the sit-at-home call is to protest the extra-judicial killings of Igbo in the country.
The group also called for the release of Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeuko a.k.a. Rev. King from prison.
Rev. King was sentenced to death in 2007 by a Lagos High Court having been found guilty of murder.
MASSOB also declared June 8 as Biafran public holiday.
In a statement yesterday in Onitsha, by Regional Administrator of Oshimili South Asaba Region, Chinedu Amaifeobu, and Regional Director for Security Oshimili South Prince Adili Ajana Ignetius, MASSOB warned against failure to comply with sit-at-home order.
The statement said: “This sit-At-home exercise was as a result of numerous killings of Ndigbo in Nigeria, mostly in the Northern Region, extra judicially killing of our people in Biafra land, the wanton destruction of our people’s properties and the insensitive murder of six Igbo on June 8, 2004 at Apo Village FCT, Abuja.
“June 8, 2013 as a day of mourning is set aside to remember and honour our innocent brothers/Sisters, mothers, fathers and children who have been wickedly and callously killed, murdered and massacred by Islamist terrorist (Boko Harram) Nigerian Army, police and Islamist Religious fundamentalists.
“MASSOB decrees that their deaths will never be in vain, it must be avenged by actualising Biafra. Keeping quiet and making a lots of noise on pages of Newspapers by some Igbo groups is not enough to salvage this deadly condition of Ndigbo.
“MASSOB urges Ndigbo irrespective of their locations to observe this one-day Sit-At-Home from 6am-4pm. It is a national duty for every Biafran, an honour for our fatherland, a special sacrifice offered for our freedom, a unique price paid for the world to know about our existence.
“There shall be no movement of vehicles, persons etc. All private/general motor parks, major/minor markets, shops, schools, air/sea ports, public/business places, banks shall be closed on June 8, 2013. There will be no marriage/burial ceremonies on that day.
Also yesterday, 14 MASSOB members were arrested by security men.
In a statement by the Director of Information of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, the group condemned the incessant attacks and arrests of its members by security men, describing it as a cowardly act against a nonviolent group.
Uche, who insisted that the arrest of the MASSOB members was intended to instigate artificial tension in Igbo land and scuttle President Goodluck administration, demanded the immediate and unconditional release of MASSOB members detained.
He said: “14 members of MASSOB in a chartered bus on their way to MASSOB national meeting at Okwe, Onuimo Local government area of Imo State was arrested at Nkwagu, Abakaliki at a checking point and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIB), Ebonyi state police command.”
