Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, Chief of Army Staff, yesterday, lamented that the increasing wave of socio-political and ethno-religious violence recorded in different parts of the country was draining the resources of the Nigerian Army.
Azubuike Ihejirika stated this in his speech, read by the General Officer Commanding 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major-General Obi Omahi, at the opening ceremony of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps Warrant Officers/Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Training Week 2013.
It was held at the 35 Artillery Brigade Officers’ Mess, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
He spoke on Contemporary Security Challenges of the Nigerian Army: The Roles of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps Warrant Officers/Senior Non-Commissioned Officers.
Ihejirika explained that personnel of the Nigerian Army have been involved in various internal security arrangements, including the Joint Task Forces set up to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the North and to check militancy and kidnapping in the Niger Delta in the South-East.
He further said that the increasing wave of the violence and insecurity occasioned by the activities of such non-state actors in different parts of the country was already straining the Army’s financial resources.
The Army boss said: “No doubt, you are aware of the increasing wave of socio-political and ethno-religious crises threatening the nation’s security lately.
“This has assumed a high dimension, witnessing spates of bombings and attacks on Key Points, KPs; Vulnerable Points, VPs, and other strategic areas of interest to the country.
“This has left serious demands on Nigerian Army resources. We also know that funding is fundamental to containing this security challenges. Success in this pursuit therefore calls for prudent and efficient management and application of available funds.
“I envision an Army that will effectively manage its available resources to be able to meet contemporary challenges.”
