A top official of the party, who pleaded anonymity, said the
party is so broke that it could not even host a meeting let alone initiate
programmes.
Meanwhile, the Committee which National Chairman of the All
Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, constituted recently to
map out ways of strengthening the party has met with its topnotch in a bid to
close ranks.
The South-East zonal PDP, which operates its account with
former Intercontinental Bank, now Access Bank, is said to have only N10, 000 as
balance. The reason for the poor state of the party, our reporter learnt, was
the principle of its chairman, retired Col. Austin Akobundu, who is not in the
habit of approaching governors in the zone and begging them for money unlike
those who were there before him. The
governors have also developed apathy towards the affairs of the zonal party,
the source disclosed.
The source explained that when Olisa Metuh was the zonal
chairman, the party was not facing such financial challenges because Metuh knew
how to massage the ego of the governors. “Metuh can go to the governors and cry
for money,” he said, adding that Akobundu would not beg any of the governors
for money.
The source said as a result of the poverty of the party, it
has become weak and unable to implement programmes ahead of the 2015 general
election while the governors have become stronger than the party.
The Umeh Committee, chaired by Ziggy Azike, met with
Governors: Peter Obi of Anambra State and Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Ralph
Uwazuruike, leader of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State
of Biafra (MASSOB); Senator Chris
Anyanwu, members of the Anambra and Imo States Houses of Assembly and other
APGA members in the National Assembly. Feelers from the committee indicate that
things are looking up for the party with the members closing ranks and agreeing
to work in the interest of the party.
